When Buck is smuggled from his beloved home in the Santa Clara Valley and forced to work as a sled-dog in the frozen wilderness of the Yukon, he must forget the long, lazy Californian days and face a life of constant toil and danger under the whip of cruel or inept masters, where survival itself must be fought for. But with his primal instincts stirred, how long can Buck resist the call of the wild? Set at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush, The Call of the Wild is one of the greatest evocations of the natural world, and perhaps the best example of London’s famously urgent and vivid style. This edition also includes "Brown Wolf", "That Spot" and "To Build a Fire" - three Yukon tales that demonstrate London’s mastery of the short-story genre.

The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906) are world famous animal stories. Set in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s, The Call of the Wild is about Buck, the magnificent cross-bred offspring of a St Bernard and a Scottish Collie. Stolen from his pampered life on a Californian estate and shipped to the Klondike to work as a sledge dog, he triumphs over his circumstances and becomes the leader of a wolf pack. The story records the 'decivilisation' of Buck as he answers 'the call of the wild', an inherent memory of primeval origins to which he instinctively responds. In contrast. White Fang relates the tale of a wolf born and bred in the wild which is civilised bv the master he comes to trust and love. The brutal world of the Klondike miners and their dogs is brilliantly evoked and Jack London's rendering of the sentient life of Buck and White Fang as they confront their destiny is enthralling and convincing. The deeper resonance of these stories derives from the authors use of the myth of the hero who survives by strength and courage, a powerful myth that still appeals to our collective unconscious. One of the 20th century's most prolific adventure fiction writers, collected here are the very best of Jack London's wonderful and varied output. From White Fang to The Iron Heel, The Call of the Wild to The People of the Abyss, London's novels are intense and atmospheric, and deserve their standing and reputation as some of the most exciting adventure stories ever put to paper. Jack London was highly qualified to be one of the 20th century's greatest writers of adventure stories, for he was one of its greatest adventurers. He was, to name but a few of his many occupations, an oyster pirate, government patrolman, seal hunter, gold prospector, war correspondent, landowner and tramp. From his vast and varied life experiences he drew inspiration for over fifty books in a literary career spanning only seventeen years. His work is remarkable, vivid and exciting, much like the author himself. From The Call of the Wild and White Fang, which rank as two of the best dog stories ever written, to the sea-based The Sea-Wolf and the social critiques of The People of the Abyss and The Iron Heel, Jack London's variety of work, not to mention the sheer quality, place him at the forefront of 20th century classic fiction.

The Call of the Wild, White Fang and Other Stories collects some of Jack London's most profound and moving allegorical tales. This Penguin Classics edition is edited by Andrew Sinclair with an introduction by James Dickey. The Call of the Wild, London's masterpiece about a dog learning to survive in the wilderness, sees pampered pet Buck snatched from his home and set to work as a sled-dog. White Fang, set in the frozen tundra and boreal forests of Canada's Yukon territory, is the story of a wolf-dog struggling to survive in a human society every bit as violent as the natural world. This volume of Jack London's famed stories of the North also includes 'Batard', in which an abused dog takes revenge on his owner; and 'Love of Life', in which an injured prospector, abandoned by his partner, must struggle home alone through the wilderness, stalked by a lone wolf. In his introduction, James Dickey probes London's strong personal and literary identification with the wolf-dog as a symbol and totem. Andrew Sinclair, London's official biographer and the volume's editor, provides a brief account of London's life as a sailor, desperado, socialist, adventurer and acclaimed author. Jack London (1876-1916) was born John Griffith Chaney in San Francisco, California. By the age of sixteen he had left school, worked in a canning factory, spent time as an oyster pirate and been a member of the Fish Patrol in the San Francisco Bay. In 1893 he joined a sealing cruise, which took him as far abroad as Japan. In 1896 he was caught up in the gold rush to the Klondike river in north-west Canada, which became the inspiration for The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906).
