May 1884 saw the publication in Paris of a fin de siecle novel that became a perverse sensation on the European cultural scene. A Rebours (translated both as Against the Grain and Against Nature) by Joris-Karl Huysmans was written as a seductive textbook of decadence, an antidote to the "banality" of the dominant literary styles, Naturalism and Realism. Symbolism, whose influence would endure well into the modernist era, was an artistic religion-substitute, a spiritually charged cult of beauty. A Symbolist picture or sculpture is deliberately mysterious. In place of intellectual comprehension, the work seeks to have the beholder experience its esoteric depths like a vision. The undeniable pinnacle of the golden age of Spanish painting Acclaimed for its blending of realism with atmosphere, and for its deeply sensitive appreciation of character, the work of Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660) represents the undeniable pinnacle of the golden age of Spanish painting. Born in Seville but of Portuguese origin, Velazquez became Court Painter to Philip IV in 1623. A steady worker, using primarily sombre low-toned coloring, he met Rubens in 1628, and soon after made a first trip to Italy. The pictures painted there reveal a growing interest in both color range and in the male nude. Vel?zquez only returned to Italy once again in the late 1640's, where he painted his famous portrait of Pope Innocent X and his only female nude, the "Rokeby Venus". But his greatness lies perhaps in his empathetic studies of such characters as the dwarf playmates of the royal children. The weathering of the skin, rags and mortality, as well as the ageing face of the despondent monarch increasingly preoccupied him in later years. The power, insight and brilliant technique of these paintings were to prove profoundly influential on such later artists as Manet, Delacroix, Picasso and Bacon.

The king of the contemplative landscape The beauty of nature and man’s loneliness are dominant themes in the work of Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). The artist often places a small human figure in a broad landscape, as in his famous paintings Monk by the Sea and The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog. For a long time the importance and influence of this great Romantic painter were underestimated. When he died, Friedrich had already been forgotten by his contemporaries and was only rediscovered in the early 20th century. Today he is considered to be the most important German painter of his generation and a precursor of Expressionism. Once Friedrich gave the following advice to an artist-colleague of his who was constricted by academic rules: “Shut your physical eye so that you first see your painting with your spiritual eye. Renaissancegenie Hans Holbein d. J. – zeitlose Portrats aus einer revolutionaren Epoche Auch ohne das ikonische Portrat, das Hans Holbein der Jungere (1497/98–1543) von Heinrich VIII. malte, wurde man beim Namen dieses englischen Konigs noch an Ehefrauen, die ihren Kopf verlieren, an Bildersturm, Gemetzel, Katholikenverfolgung und einen radikalen Umbau der englischen Gesellschaft im 16. Jahrhundert denken. Dank Holbein ist er als wuchtiger Machtmensch mit Quadratschadel, stechendem Blick und – angedeutet, aber unmissverstandlich – drohend uber dem Schwertknauf schwebender rechter Hand vor ultramarinem Hintergrund unsterblich geworden. So wie all die anderen Zeitgenossen, die das Gluck hatten, von Holbein portratiert zu werden. Aus einer Augsburger Malerfamilie stammend, hatte Holbein sich zuerst in Basel in der Sakralmalerei einen Namen gemacht, bevor er zu einem der bedeutendsten und gefragtesten Portratmaler seiner Zeit wurde. Auf seinen Reisen knupfte er Kontakte zu zahlreichen Personlichkeiten aus Politik, Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft und fand schlie?lich in England am Hofe von Heinrich VIII. eine Festanstellung als Hofmaler, der neben der Konigsfamilie auch die zahlreichen Hochzeitskandidatinnen aus ganz Europa portratieren musste, die sich der notorische Heinrich ausgeguckt hatte. Holbeins Portrats, ob von Adeligen, Kaufleuten der Hanse oder Intellektuellen, wurden als bahnbrechend empfunden. Sein Umgang mit Farben, die fast fotorealistische Darstellung von Stoffen und Texturen, der lebensechte Stil, aber auch die formale Asthetik und der kuhl-sachliche Stil seiner spaten Werke zeigen eine ganz eigene, unverwechselbare Handschrift.
